Rowan Termly Overview

WB 3rd September and WB 7th September

Welcome back for the new year! Rowan dived into our new topic of World Wars, role playing an air raid shelter and learning about some of the factors that led up to the first world war.

In Maths, Year 3 and 4 worked on their place value skills by counting and partitioning numbers up to 1000. Year 5 learned to use and partition numbers up to 10 million and to read and write numbers in words and numerals.

In English, Rowan has started with grammar skills, focusing in particular on word classes. The children learned about types of nouns and how to used verbs correctly in the past, present and future tense.

Year 6 have completed baseline assessments in English and Maths, which will be used to plan their learning for this year.

In science, Year 3 and 4 learned about solids, liquids and gases and how the particles in each one behave. Year 5 and 6 investigated the properties of materials, including hardness, opacity, magnetism and conductivity.

Week Beginning 14th September

This week Rowan class have continued work on place value. Year 3 and 4 practised partitioning numbers flexibly and representing them in different ways, and year 5 and 6 focused on finding more and less than a given number, as well as ordering and comparing numbers.

In English, Rowan class completed their work on grammar by examining verbs, verb phrases and the structure of simple sentences.

On Tuesday, Rowan class visited IWM Duxford as part of our topic on the world wars. We toured the operations block and looked at a range of aircraft used in both wars.

On Thursday, the children explored coding using the BBC Microbits as part of National Coding Week.

Week beginning 21st September

This week, Rowan class continued to work hard on Place Value in Maths. Year 5 and 6 began by estimating and placing numbers up to 10 million on a number line, then moved on to rounding numbers within 100 000. They learned to round any whole number to the nearest appropriate power of 10.

Year 3 and 4 worked on calculating 1, 10, 100 or 1000 more or less than a given number, and also worked on number lines, exploring and estimating amounts on number lines up to 10 000.

In English, Rowan class began a new text: FArTHER by Grahame Baker-Smith. The children made predictions, used inference skills to explore the text and illustrations and used drama to interview some of the characters.

In topic this week, Rowan class learned more about the Western Front of World War 1. They learned about the trench systems that soldiers used to keep themselves safe and the awful conditions that soldiers lived in.

In science, Year 3 and 4 explored how gases are all around us, while Year 5 and 6 conducted a fair test into which materials make the best thermal insulators.
